Flatbush is a neighborhood located in the southern central section of Brooklyn. The community name derives from the Dutch for "level forest" and is roughly bounded by Parkside Avenue to the north, Nostrand Avenue to the east, Avenue H to the south and Coney Island Avenue to the west. Flatbush consists of several neighborhoods including Prospect Park South, Beverly Square West, Beverly Square East, Prospect-Lefferts Garden, Ditmas Park, and Fiske Terrace, as well as the southernmost portion of Prospect Park.
Flatbush has been home to a number of notable residents including Barbara Streisand (singer), Busta Rhymes (rapper), Cal Abrams (baseball player), Mary Tyler Moore (actress), Neil Diamond (singer), and Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Supreme Court justice). The community has traditionally diverse populations, including large communities of ethnic Italians, Jews, and West Indians, and is considered one of the most ethnically, culturally, and economically diverse areas in New York City. The Dutch Reformed Church and Erasmus Hall High School are two of the most famous buildings in Flatbush. There are also charming Georgian revival houses located on the south side of Kenmore Terraces and Victorian houses in Ditmas Park; both areas have been designated as Landmark Districts. In total, Flatbush contains more than 3,500 one and two-family houses and thirty thousand apartments. |
